EXAMINATIONS FOR PRIMARY AND JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS

(1)    THE GAMBIA

The Gambia Basic Education Certificate Examination

This examination started from the 13th April to 19th May, 2006 involving 20,238 candidates from 128 schools.  The figure showed a relative decrease of 1.98% as compared to the previous year.  The results for the examinations were released on 26th September, 2006.

(2)    GHANA

Basic  Education Certificate Examination (BECE)

308,325 candidates sat for the examinations with 168,945 being males and 139,380 females. This figure represents an increase of 7.32% of the 2005 candidature of 287,305.  There was a 6.51% increase in the number of male candidature and an 8.25% increase in the female candidature. A total of 44 blind candidates comprising 31 males and 13 females sat for the examination.  The period of examination was from 24th to 28th April, 2006 while the results were released on 30th August, 2006.

(3)    LIBERIA

(a)    Sixth Grade Examination

A total of 25,671 candidates entered for the examination as against 22,267 in 2005, reflecting an increase of 15.29% of this figure, 14,610 were males and 11,016 females.  The examination period was from 5th to 9th June, 2006.

(b)    Junior High School Certificate Examination

Patronage of this examination showed a slight increase of 9.83% over the 2005 figure of 19,253 as against 21,145 in 2006.  The examination was held from 5th to 15th June, 2006, while the results were released on 27th September, 2006.

(4)    SIERRA LEONE

(a)    National Primary School Examination

The examination was conducted on the 5th of May, 2006 with an entry figure of 89,636 representing 12.92% over the figure of 79,380 in 2005.  The results were released in August 4th, 2006.

(b)    Basic Education Certificate Examination
The period of examination was 3rd to 14th July, 2006.  48,773 candidates participated with 28,029 being males one of  whom was blind and 15,744 females. This registered an increase of 28.90% over the 2005 figure of 37,837.  The results were released to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology on 13th October, 2006 and to the Secondary Schools on 17th October, 2006.
