I am highly delighted to welcome you all to WAEC International Summit on Examination Malpractice. In March this year, the governing board of WAEC was in Abuja to hold its 65thAnnual Council Meeting. At the meeting, the members expressed deep concern over the increasing spate of irregularities in public examinations, including those organized by WAEC, and the adverse effects of examination irregularities on national development. Council, at the end of that meeting, articulated the urgent need to eradicate fraud from public examinations in our society. Council also approved all that were required to make possible our gathering here today. Madam Chairperson of Council, we cannot thank you enough.

Distinguished stakeholders in education, the perpetrators of examination malpractice seek to violate with impunity all the rules and regulations which govern the conduct of an examination. Over the years, examination malpractice has manifested in various activities within or outside the examination halls. The specific activities and practices that constitute malpractice will be detailed and vividly described by paper presenters in the course of this summit.

Examination malpractice has remained a thorn in the flesh of examining bodies. WAEC, on its part has continued to utilise every available means and opportunity to discourage the perpetration of the malaise. The measures adopted by the Council include cancellation of candidates’ results, baring of candidates from the examinations, derecognition of schools and others. These measures appear not to deter the perpetrators who have continued to devise new ways of carrying out their fraudulent acts.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the consequences of examination malpractice on educational institutions and the society are grave and worrisome. Apart from the damage it does to the image of examining bodies in terms of credibility or reputation, huge amount of resources are committed annually into the fight against the malaise.

Over the years, appeals have gone to stakeholders in education to partner WAEC more seriously in the fight against the cankerworm. One of the ways we can do this it to use this summit as a platform to generate ideas and strategies which will set the stage for the eradication of examination malpractice in our Sub-region. I want to urge you all, especially those making presentations in these two days, to offer workable suggestions which would be vigorously pursued by stakeholders in the years ahead.

I once again welcome you heartily, as we all look forward to very insightful presentations, incisive deliberations and a most successful summit.

Thank you all and God bless.
