WELCOME ADDRESS BY ALHAJI MUHAMMAD MUSA BELLO, HONOURABLE MINISTER OF THE FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY, ABUJA AT THE FORMAL OPENING CEREMONY OF THE 65TH ANNUAL MEETING OF THE WEST AFRICAN EXAMINATIONS COUNCIL, ABUJA ON TUESDAY, MARCH 21, 2017 PDF Print E-mail

The President and Commander-in Chief of the Armed Forces

Of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,

Madam Chairman of the West African Examinations Council,

Distinguished Senators here present,

Members of the Federal Executives Council,

Your Excellencies, High Commissioners,

Ambassadors and Members of the Diplomatic Corps,

Your Royal Highnesses,

My Lords Spiritual and Temporal,

Members of the West African Examinations Council,

Invited Guests,

Principals and Students from invited Schools,

Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen.

I feel honoured and highly delighted to welcome members, delegates and invitees of the West African Examinations Council, who have come from the English – speaking West African Examinations Council, on the occasion of the Council’s Annual Meeting for the year 2017, to the City of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

I am particularly happy that the Council is coming for the fifth time is twenty years, having had its annual meetings in Abuja in 1997, 2002, 2007 and 2012. This development underscores the hospitality which the city of Abuja is famous for. Please come again and again.

It is also very significant to us that the Council is celebrating its 65th anniversary and his chosen Abuja as the venue. We are indeed appreciative of this gesture which will go down as a major social event in the history of this beautiful city, Abuja.

For those of us who have not been Abuja since 2012 when the Council had its 60th Meeting here, you would be able to observe that the City has grown tremendously with improved and expanded infrastructure. This rapid growth is not unconnected with the concerted efforts of the Federal Government in making Abuja, not only a home for all but also the Centre of Unity.

The Federal Capital Territory has also invested hugely in education. Your Excellency, Madam Chairman, I am glad to inform you that the Federal Capital Territory, has recorded steady increase in the entry figures for WAEC Examinations since 1997 when it first presented 4,621 candidates for the Council’s examination for School Candidates. In the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2016, the FCT presented 20, 209 candidates and is set to present 21, 600 candidates for the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2017.

There is a common saying here in Nigeria that “Abuja is Unity”. This is true because the homely atmosphere of Abuja is here for Nigerians and visitors to share and enjoy. Crime rate is very low and we shall continue to work hard to keep the city safer.

On this occasion, I particularly welcome Mr. President, even though he is the Chief Host. I only act on his behalf as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. We are familiar with his keen interest in educational matters and not surprised that he has come in person to grace this occasion. I also want to specially welcome the Chairman of WAEC, the Registrar and other delegates to this very auspicious Meeting.

On behalf of the people of The Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, I warmly welcome you all. Please at home in Abuja, the seat of ECOWAS. Feel free to explore as I hand over the Key to the City to you. We promise you our traditional Abuja hospitality.

Once again, you are all welcome.
